Teacher Education

The existence of educators in today's society is a field of work rather wide open in its opportunities. However, the existence of enthusiastic, child-caring, career-oriented educators has dwindled over the years, taking a toll on the perception of professors and teachers alike who have a heartfelt passion for this profession. YES Opportunities hopes to provide future educators the opportunity to enter this field who have the passion to pursue Teaching as their profession, as was the case for whom we've named our teacher education endowment, Ms. Maggie F. Watts.

Ms. Maggie Watts was a native of Norfolk, Virginia who was a 1965 graduate of Norfolk State University. She used her college education serving for over 30 years as a public school teacher in Washington, DC and Prince Georges County, Maryland. She also served as an Advisor in YES Opportunities, Inc. until the time of her passing in 2002. It is fitting that this scholarship endowment in her name is established by YES Opportunities at her alma mater of Norfolk State University.

The endowment, officially named the Youth Education Scholarship Opportunities, Inc. - Maggie F. Watts Endowed Scholarship Fund, is governed by the Norfolk State University Foundation. Responsibility for governing the Foundation is vested in a Board of Directors, comprised of 4-5 persons, who will select qualified students pursuing undergraduate degrees in Early Childhood/Elementary Education, Teacher Education, or Administration. For additional information on the full conditions concerning this scholarship endowment, please contact Mr. Phillip Adams, Vice President for University Advancement, at pdadams@nsu.edu or at 757-823-8323.
